Strengthening Distributed Generation with Smarter Communication Frameworks

As the world transitions quickly from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources and adopts more distributed generation (DG) systems, reliable telecommunications systems are critical to maintaining the performance and reliability of both the grid and its operations. Our article, which appeared in IEEE Access, is a complete bibliographic review of the different types of communication architectures that have been used for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs), enabling the exchange of both AC and DC energy between the grid and DG (using solid-state transformers), and transferring energy in parallel to other existing and newly developed systems.
