What surprising structural challenges have you encountered in older Bellingham homes built before the 1990s?
Man, yeah those older homes can throw some curveballs for sure. In my last place over near Fairhaven, built back in the '70s, we discovered the main support beam in the basement had started bowing pretty badly over time—probably from poor drainage letting water pool underneath for decades. It wasn't dramatic at first, just a slight unevenness in the floors that I blamed on settling furniture, but once we opened things up it was clear the whole thing needed reinforcement. Ended up chatting with a few folks and hearing similar stories about shifting foundations and unexpected rot in crawlspaces around here. If you're hitting those kinds of headaches, sometimes bringing in a solid general contractor Bellingham has makes a difference—someone local who knows the soil and weather quirks without turning it into a huge sales pitch. Just my two cents from dealing with it firsthand.
