What is weed barrier fabric and how does it work in gardening and landscaping?

Weed barrier fabric, also known as landscape fabric or weed control fabric, is a specially designed material used in gardening and landscaping to prevent unwanted weeds from growing. It is typically made from woven or non-woven polypropylene or polyester fibers that allow water and air to pass through while blocking sunlight from reaching the soil beneath.

The main principle behind weed barrier fabric is light deprivation. Weeds need sunlight to grow. When the fabric is laid over the soil surface, it blocks sunlight, preventing weed seeds from germinating and stopping existing weeds from continuing to grow. Without light, weeds cannot perform photosynthesis and eventually die.

Despite blocking sunlight, high-quality weed barrier fabrics are designed to be permeable. This means water, air, and nutrients can still penetrate through the fabric and reach the soil and plant roots. This helps maintain healthy soil structure and supports the growth of desired plants while suppressing weeds.
